San Mateo County is located in the San Francisco Oakland metro area.  The county was named for the Arroyo de San Matheo, a stream flowing into San Francisco Bay.  San Mateo County is one of 58 counties in California.  The estimated population in 2004 was 699,216.  This was a decrease of -1.12% from the 2000 census. 

In 2002, the per capita personal income in San Mateo County was $53,315.  This was an increase of 33.4% from 1997.  The 2002 figure was 173% of the national per capita income, which was $30,906.
